Glossary

Cardiac arrest

A medical emergency when the heart suddenly stops beating. Causes can include irregular heart rhythm, heart disease, and blood loss. Immediate interventions like cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) along with defibrillation (electrical shock) and medications are needed to improve chances of survival. Without any treatment, cardiac arrest can lead to death within minutes.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

An emergency procedure using chest compressions for people in cardiac arrest. It’s often performed in combination with artificial breaths.

Defibrillation

A treatment for when the heart is not beating normally. A defibrillator is used to deliver an electric current to the heart to re-establish a normal rhythm.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

Also known as paramedic or ambulance services. Includes the people and services that respond to and provide emergency medical care to patients before they reach a hospital.

Neurological functioning

The status or condition of a person’s brain and how it functions. Often involves assessing a person’s reflexes, movements, senses, etc.

Out of hospital cardiac arrest

Cardiac arrest that occurs outside of the hospital setting.
