Study Information
Participating Regions
Patients
Individuals of all ages who experience cardiac arrest outside the hospital, evaluated by organized EMS personnel within the R3 coverage area and:
- Attempts given to shock by lay responders or emergency personnel, or chest compressions given by organized EMS personnel (treated group)
- Were pulseless but did not receive attempts to shock, nor CPR by EMS personnel (untreated group – i.e. Advance Directives or obviously dead)
The types of information collected varies depending on the patient, but ranges from demographics (such as age, gender and location), interventions (such as CPR, medications), and outcomes (such as survival and neurological functioning).
Patient identifiers are used to link to provincial datasets for additional information (such as survival and neurological functioning) when information from participating agencies are not enough. All patients’ identifiers are removed for analysis and their identities are never disclosed. Aggregate data (i.e. grouped data, where an individual cannot be identified) are then used to help participating agencies and institutions to improve patient care, and in scientific papers to share findings with the resuscitation community.
